Peace & Tranquility is an original mixed-media work on acid-washed steel inspired by Michelangelo’s The Creation of Adam. Two hands reach toward one another across the naturally weathered surface of the steel, while a pair of handcrafted metal roses emerges from the space between them.
The raw patina of the steel becomes part of the composition itself, bringing warmth, age, and imperfection to the familiar imagery. The sculptural roses extend beyond the painted surface, adding dimension and transforming the work from a traditional painting into something that sits between painting and metalwork.

About the Medium
Each steel panel is individually acid washed to develop its own natural patina before the painting process begins. Rather than covering the steel, Doug works with the variations already present in the metal, allowing its color, texture, and imperfections to remain visible as part of the finished artwork.
For pieces like Peace & Tranquility, handcrafted steel elements are incorporated directly into the composition, giving the artwork a sculptural quality that cannot be replicated on canvas.
